Mascara is one of the most common beauty products used by modern women when applying makeup, but before applying a thick mascara, let us tell you what might be hidden in your favorite mascara and what mascara is made of. The following article will help you better understand mascara in depth.

Millions of women worldwide use mascara extensively to make their lashes look younger. Mascara has been around since the 19th century and is now an essential part of a woman's beauty regimen.

1. What is mascara

History of mascara:

Mascara is a cosmetic product applied to the eyelashes to thicken and decorate them. It can also be used to color, lengthen or curl them, depending on the type of mascara. Mascara is generally sold as a liquid cosmetic in a tube and is applied with a round brush. However, it is essential to know that until the official introduction of the tube wand mascara in 1957, mascara was mainly sold in the form of cakes.

Cosmetics have been tried to darken eyelashes and eyebrows in many cultures since ancient times. Ancient Egyptians and Romans would also have used eye cosmetics similar to mascara. French perfume merchant Eugene Rimmel was the one who commercialized mascara in the 1830s.

Still, the next major industry innovation would come in 1913, when Maybelline Cosmetics founder TL Williams combined coal dust and petroleum jelly to produce Cake Mascara, which was applied to the lashes with a moistened brush to apply makeup. Subsequent updated versions of the mascara consisted of wax and colorant. It was in 1957 that Helena Rubenstein pioneered the ubiquitous tube wand version of mascara.

Status of mascara

There are many different mascaras on the cosmetic market today, from clear mascaras and primers that thicken the lashes without adding color to colored mascaras in many different colors. Waterproof mascaras prevent smudging of lashes, help keep lashes curled, and reduce the tendency for clumping. Volumizing and lengthening mascaras include nylon or rayon fibers that can be used as a temporary extension for lashes.

2. Common ingredients in mascara

Mascaras are typically made up of a combination of ingredients that fall broadly into waxes, oils, pigments, emollients, and preservatives, some of the most common ingredients found in mascaras.

Beeswax

Beeswax comes from honeycomb: you'll find it on many mascara ingredient lists, and it acts as a thickener and hardener, helping to keep the product smooth.

Lanolin

This waxy ingredient is extracted from sheep's wool, produced by long-haired animals to keep their coats dry and protect them from the cold. In cosmetics, it is typically used as an emollient. Wax is often used in mascaras to help cover individual lashes and thicken them.

Mineral oil

This is a petrolatum derivative that is commonly used in mascara to give it adhesion. Although there is much debate about the safety of this ingredient, the FDA allows mineral oil to be used as an active ingredient in various products, including those for use in and around the eyes.

Castor Oil

Generally derived from the castor oil plant, fatty acid oil is commonly used as a thickening agent in mascara and helps condition and moisturize lashes.

Paraffin Wax

This soft wax is generally extracted from petroleum and is a moisturizer in most cosmetics. In mascara, as in most other waxes used, the primary purpose is to help the color adhere to the lashes.

Flower waxes

Some mascaras also contain waxes derived from flowers to cover and protect the lashes. Bitter orange blossom wax, rose wax, osmanthus wax, and blue lotus wax are flower waxes often used in mascaras.

Iron oxide

Generally used as a colorant, this ingredient creates black, yellow, and red pigments in cosmetics. The shades of black and brown mascara are derived from this ingredient. It is produced from both natural and synthetic sources. However, the latter is more common in cosmetics. It is considered safer because natural iron oxide sources are more likely to be contaminated with impurities.

Carbon Black

Carbon black is also used as a colorant in mascara and is usually used as a black pigment.

Nylon, rayon, and silk microfibers

Often used in fiber mascaras, they adhere to the surface of the lashes and add length and volume. This ingredient is not recommended for contact lens users as these fibers can irritate the eyes.

Glycerin

It is one of cosmetics' most popular ingredients due to its outstanding moisturizing properties. When used in mascara, it gives the product a smooth consistency and helps it stick to the lashes.

3. Daily use of mascara.

Mascara can be applied to all lashes, but some people are used to applying it just above the eyes. Wiggling the applicator brush at the base of the lashes helps make them look thicker, and moving the brush gently and slowly to the ends helps reduce clumping. It is best to apply a second coat before the first one dries to avoid clumping.

Because mascara is used on such a delicate part of the body as the eyes, mascara brush tubes should not be left in place for too long, as mascara brushes that are left in place for too long may contain bacteria, and using such brushes can allow bacteria to enter the eyes and cause serious health problems. Although most commercially available mascaras contain antibacterial agents, any mascara older than four months should be replaced. Any mascara that irritates the eyes or has a change in texture and smell should be discarded.
